What can professors see on Panopto? ›

Faculty and administrators can easily view reports in Panopto that show which students watched each video, how long students watched videos before dropping off, and more.

If you have a video that is 10 minutes long, and a user watches the video at 1.25x speed, Panopto will report that the user has watched all 10 minutes, aka 100% completion. Viewer playback speed, faster or slower, does not affect the viewer completion percentages.

With Panopto, students can record multimedia presentations as homework assignments using their laptop, tablet, or smartphone. Instructors can then review each student's video on-demand, and provide comments and feedback directly in the recording.

Faculty Access to Student Information

Faculty are not automatically entitled to access all information about their students. Faculty have a legitimate educational interest in information only if the information is relevant and necessary for them to fulfill their role in the student's education.

Choose Captions from the menu on the left and select Download file.. Panopto automatically includes time stamps within the transcript. However, with audio only files, time stamps are not necessary and may distract students, so you may want to remove them from the transcript.

Panopto-Zoom Integration

The Zoom Cloud recording will be automatically imported into Panopto for further manipulation. Our recommendation is that if is a synchronous, live session, then use Zoom to record. If it is pre-recorded and meant for consumption later, use Panopto.

Public Recordings are visible to all students in your course when they click the Panopto Recordings link on your course Canvas site. Private Recordings are only visible to instructors, TAs, and course designers.

The Studio tool in Canvas gives you access to analytics showing you which of your students have watched your videos, and what portions of your videos have been viewed.

Click on the gear icon in the lower right corner again to minimize the Settings menu. The Smart Camera feature will be enabled for all future uses and can be disabled by going back into the Settings menu and deselecting its checkbox.

Videos will live on Panopto indefinitely.

Can you get in trouble for recording lectures? ›

Whether or not it's legal to record your instructor's lectures is dependent upon their policy, as well as your school guidelines. Many professors are strictly against recording the audio, video, or images of their private classroom lectures.

Is Recording Lectures in College Legal? The short answer is “yes”. Recording lectures in college has been an accepted practice for students with disabilities who need access to a better educational experience. Even so, you still need to consider certain rules when recording courses.

Panopto is a free online recording software Dominican University uses that is compatible with Canvas. If you ever watched a recording of a lecture on Canvas, it was probably recorded through Panopto.

Faculty with educational interest can access records for students for a set number of reasons: advising, letters of recommendation, recommendation of students for awards or societies etc., for guiding students or giving them accurate academic advice.

Note: If you have Creator rights to a folder, a recording icon, which looks like a red dot, will appear in the lower right-hand corner of the folder icon.
