Bezalel Eithan Raviv, the CEO and founder of Lionsgate Network, a crypto recovery service with a unique expertise in blockchain forensics, has shed light on this intriguing tactic. After a deposit was made into a Bitcoin wallet linked to Guthrie's ransom note, Raviv explained that this could be a strategic move by investigators.
"If the reported $150 transaction is indeed a test, it's a clever investigative tactic," Raviv told Page Six. "A small transfer can confirm wallet activity and trigger blockchain monitoring tools."
But here's where it gets controversial: Raviv challenges the common misconception that Bitcoin is anonymous. He emphasizes that Bitcoin transactions leave a permanent digital footprint, making them traceable. "Every movement of funds creates a signal, and this can be a powerful tool for investigators," he added.
When monitoring criminal crypto activity, Raviv's firm employs a unique strategy they call the "cow's bell." Once a wallet is identified and tagged, every transaction sets off an alert, no matter how the funds are split or transferred. It's a comprehensive approach to tracking digital assets.
Raviv believes that by sending funds to the Bitcoin wallet, authorities may have shifted the dynamic. "The kidnapper may think they're in control, but now they're the ones being watched. They're no longer just making demands; they've become the target of forensic tracking," he explained.
However, Raviv acknowledges that investigators likely have their own protocols. "Ransom strategy decisions should be led by law enforcement and professional negotiators. The critical phase now is real-time monitoring, as movement can lead to mistakes," he advised.
The case involves the disappearance of Savannah Guthrie's 84-year-old mother, Nancy, who was last seen alive at her Tucson home on January 31st. She was reported missing the next day, and an alleged ransom note demanded $6 million in Bitcoin for her release, with two deadlines set.
Savannah and her siblings offered to pay but requested proof of life first. As of Tuesday morning, the Bitcoin wallet balance remained at $0, but a small deposit was made later that night.
It's unclear who administered the exchange, but Raviv believes it could be a simple tactic to catch the kidnapper. "Sending a small amount of funds can help lead to the perp. It's a tactic we've used successfully in previous cases," he said.
Raviv suggests that the kidnapper revealed themselves by providing the Bitcoin address. "He showed his Achilles to blockchain forensics experts," he added.
While authorities have yet to identify a suspect, they've released disturbing security footage of an armed and masked individual outside Nancy's home on the night of her disappearance. A man named Carlos was briefly detained but later released.
On Wednesday, TMZ reported receiving a third Bitcoin demand, this time for information on the abductor. FBI Phoenix is conducting an extensive search in the Catalina Foothills area related to the Guthrie investigation.
