Table of Contents

A lot of money we spend goes toward new tech. Look at Elon Musk—hebought himself an entire platformthat he didn't even really want, for the low, low price of $44 billion. And ever since then, he's been treating it and its staff with thekindnessandrespectyou'd expect of him. After all, he wanted simply toopen it up to "all kinds of speech."(As long as that speech isn't mean. To him.)

That's great for Elon, but for the rest of us, not all expensive gadgets and gizmos and subscriptions are worthwhile purchases. There's a point of diminishing returns with almost any overpriced item you buy, especially digital toys that depreciate the instant the box is open.

Below are some of the most expensive computing and tech products around, many of which we covet nonetheless. And why not? When you need to take out a second mortgage just to afford some toys, you're in a class by yourself. Not one of these products is a gag, either. They really exist and someone, somewhere, can buy them.

Gucci X Oura

$950.00 at GucciSee It

Most wearable tech goes on your wrist to track your vitals, but if that’s too gaudy for you, a ring may do. The most advanced ring-based trackers come from Oura—they’ve now got continuous heart rate and temperature sensing, and period predictions if you pay the $5.99 monthly subscription fee. The standard Oura looks okay, or you can pay more for the smooth lines of the titanium Horizon in silver, black, stealth grey, gold, and rose gold, in sizes 6 up to 13. The dimple on the inside will tell you how to orient the ring for the best use of the sensors. Real Richie Riches will want the Gucci X Oura for $950 or more.

Apple Watch Series 8 Hermès

$1,759.00 at HermesSee It

Basic Apple Watches, even in Series 8 form, can be found for $399. But with the $1,759 Hermès version, you get the silver stainless steel case with a gourmette metal double tour band, which is part leather and part stainless steel links to loop your wrist. You can also get a version where the chain is actually made with leather links. There’s a whole horse motif going on, including a watch face for the always-on mode where the equine may wink at you.

Robosen Elite Optimus Prime

$699.00 at AmazonSee It

Last year, Robosen Robotics teamed up with Hasbro to unveil the 19-inch tall Optimus Prime, complete with 27 servo motors and 60 microchips—all of which means the leader of the Autobots could automatically transform into a Mac truck without a single hand laid on him. Plus, he speaks in the voice of the only man who should ever speak for Optimus, actor Peter Cullen, and can be programmed to do other movements via an app on a smartphone. This original bot eventually became the "Flagship" Optimus Prime, which currently costs $999—although new this year is the Elite Prime, an almost identical, smaller version at 16 inches high for $699. Robosen says because the Elite is smaller, it can transform and move more quickly. Important attributes to have in the war against the Decepticons.

For Folks Who Want a Robot Ride

Segway Loomo

$2,299.99 at SegwaySee It

The name Segway conjures visions of sightseers on tours or mall cops in hot pursuit, but Segway is a very different company since it was purchased by Chinese firm Ninebot a few years ago. It branched out into lots of different transportation types, such as scooters, mopeds, and dirt bikes, but some still use the same paradigm of two-wheel balancing like the original Segway scooter did 20 years ago. The Loomo is the sleekest version of that because it isn't just a scooter: It’s a waterproof 2-wheel autonomous robot that you can ride when needed. It's like if BB-8 came along and you could step on him for a quick jaunt. Loomo can follow you around until you're ready to take off or be used for keeping tabs on a place if you're not around. It only costs $2,299.99. Don't forget your helmet.

UE Live CSX Monitors

$2,199.00 at Ultimate EarsSee It

In the audio world, monitors are the ultra-high-end earpieces worn by musicians—the kind you see donned at live performances and in the studio. You don't have to feel left out with only your tragically well-priced AirPods when you can also nab the Ultimate Ears $2,199.00 UE Live CSX monitors. These get you superior noise isolation and a guaranteed perfect fit, thanks to the Fit Kit that helps you mold them to your ears before they even arrive. We gave the UE 18+ Pro Monitors an almost perfect score in our review, and the Live CSX monitors are a step above that, so you can rest aurally assured of great sound for a long time to come.

Audio-Technica ATH-WB2022

$2,700.00 at Audio-Technica U.SSee It

Presented as a 60th-anniversary special, the ATH-WB2022 luxury headphones are literally crafted from intertwined marbled maple, walnut, and mahogany wood. Of course, the company didn’t scrimp on the sounds inside, providing an independent DAC for each channel and a 45mm driver in each earcup. Perhaps the biggest innovation: built-in balanced stereo—even when used wirelessly. They support both USB and wireless connections, with up to 9 hours of battery life on the twin batteries. The ear cushions and headbands are covered in smooth, synthetic Alcantara fabric, not leather. It even comes with a durable case from Zero Halliburton, like the kind used to transport moon rocks. (Even though these are digital-only cans, there’s no noise cancellation, despite the high price.)

McIntosh XCS1.5K

$40,000.00 at McIntosh LaboratorySee It

If you’re wondering, “Hey, can I spend as much on a loudspeaker for my living room as I would on a high-end car?” The answer is yes. The XCS1.5K is a 1,500-watt central channel, ready to turn a run-of-the-mill home into a theater of pure sound. Don’t forget to get the XRT2.1K or XRT1.1K Floor Standing Loudspeakers to serve as the left and right channels. The former is 2,000 watts and costs $130,000 per pair; the latter is 1,200 watts for $60,000 per pair. That’s a lot of sound, or a lot of cars.

Astell&Kern A&Ultima SP2000T

Remember the failed Pono Player, the expensive ($399) high-end music player that Neil Young tried to launch in an attempt to get people to embrace better audio? Perhaps he didn’t charge enough. Astell&Kern’s A&ultima SP2000T (try saying that mouthful aloud) is a portable unit with four digital to analog converters (DACs) that deliver audio quality that few people have ever heard. Plus, it supports almost any kind of headphones, with jacks for 2.5mm or 4.4mm balanced and 3.5mmm unbalanced headphones. All that for only $2,499. Toss in another $199 for a leather case to protect this musical investment.

Pro-Ject Audio 2Xperience SB Sgt. Pepper Turntable Walnut

$1,600.00 at Touch of ModernSee It

Pro-Ject Audio Systems has a deal with Universal Media Group to create six collector’s item turntables with limited release. This is the third in the series, with only 1,000 of these belt-driven turntables to be made. Plus there’s a classic acrylic dust cover to go over the top. In addition to Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Pro-Ject also sells limited edition turntables styled for The White Album and Yellow Submarine.

For Music Lovers With Room to Spare

Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay A9

4.0

$3,331.05 at AmazonSee It

Never a dull moment in the design labs at Bang & Olufsen, the vendor again has an iconic-looking speaker—which even supports Google Assistant—that will transform any space. It almost looks like a 35-inch-high rattan chair you can’t sit in, but the seven drivers in this $3,499 speaker will blow listeners away. You can also buy “Art of A9” speaker covers for $130 to $525 each which bring an artistic look to the fabric. Max sound is a stunning 100dB SPL—that’s 100,000 times louder than the 50dB in a standard quiet room. Control the volume with gestures, like you're conducting a symphony.

For TV Fans Who Like to Hide the Screen

Beovision Harmony by Bang & Olufsen

Another visionary Bang & Olufsen product for the list, although the Beovision Harmony line does more than sound. These are full OLED TVs hidden behind decorative panels—with the touch of a button, the TV lifts up and the panels swing down. While it has built-in three-channel audio, throw some $16,500 Beolab 28 speakers on each side and the Harmony will also sound stellar. The TV comes in 65, 77, 83, or 88-inch 4K models; the 88 also has an option for 8K resolution. Different versions have panels of oak wood or grey mélange fabric, combined with natural aluminum. The base price on the 65-inch is $18,925; the 88-inch goes for $51,125.

ViewSonic Gaming Elite XG321UG

4.0

$2,210.99 at AmazonSee It

This gaming monitor isn’t curved, isn’t oversized (at a reasonable 32 inches), and delivers fantastically for gamers and average users alike, with an impressive mini LED implementation and excellent HDR. It even supports Nvidia Reflex and G-Synch Ultimate. What the 4K monitor does have, however, is an astronomical price tag to accompany that bleeding-edge mini LED tech.

Lenovo ThinkStation P620 (2022, Threadripper Pro 5995WX)

4.5

$1,619.00 at LenovoSee It

If you’ve got powerful work to do—like serious video editing or major program compiling—you need a PC that can handle it. The ThinkStation P620 probably can, whether you get the base model that starts at close to $3,000, or really deck out the steel chassis (weighing as much as 53 pounds) with all the goods. We reviewed a unit that topped $16,000 with 128GB of RAM (it can handle up to a terabyte), an NvidiaRTX A6000professional graphics card, and most importantly, the 64-core, 2.7GHz (4.5GHz boost) AMD Threadripper Pro 5995WX—so many cores that it needs special software to access them all.

Apple Mac Pro

$54,748.00 at Apple.comSee It

It's always worth considering the highest-end personal computer a person could buy. Arguably, that's got to be the Mac Pro when fully decked out. The base price on the tower unit is a shocking $5,999 already, but when you trick it out with a 2.5GHz 28-core Intel Xeon W Processor (+$7,000), 1.5 terabytes of DDR4 ECC RAM (+$25,000), dual Radeon Pro W6900X graphics cards with 32GB of GDDR6 memory each (+$11,400), and an 8TB solid-state drive (+$2,400), you've already hit $51,799. Add all the high-end bells like an Afterburner card PCIe accelerator, wheels on the frame, a Magic Mouse, and a Magic Trackpad, and you'll be whistling low at the final price of $54,348.00—and that's before you buy any macOS software.

Brava Oven

4.0

$1,295.00 at BravaSee It

We’ve loved the Brava Oven since 1999, and the price is down a bit—assuming you don’t get the added Bake & Breakfast version (with extra pans and egg tray) or the Chef’s Choice version with that and the signature ceramic pan. This connected countertop oven can cook in 10 different ways and heats up food fast. Moreover, it has a touch-screen front interface that shows off what’s inside using 5MB digital cameras, which keep tabs on your food so you don’t have to open the door. The Brava Oven comes with TempSensor, a digital thermometer to stick in food to make sure it hits the right internal heat level. If you want a toaster oven that’s so much more, Brava to you.

For High-Speed Flyers on the Ground

DJI Avata

3.5

$499.00 at AmazonSee It

Want a drone that is, quite simply, easy and fun to fly? DJI’s Avata has its issues—such as the high price, for one, and the potential danger to people because it lacks forward-facing sensors, requiring FAA registration due to its size. But it's lighter and smaller than the previous first-person view (FPV) quadcopter from DJI (the FPV Combo) and capable of speeds up to 60mph in manual mode. The pilot will fly it with the FPV goggles strapped to the face, using a gyroscopic controller. It may be as close as they come to feeling like they have Superman’s POV.

Vaonis Hyperia

$45,000.00 at VaonisSee It

Vaonis's line of digital telescopes starts with the $1,499 Vespera, but at the high end is a unit that looks worthy of a full observatory. The Hyperia, which they call an "exploration station," combines a telescope and a camera (using a Sony sensor). When fully open and extended, it measures 6.9 feet tall and 15.7 feet in diameter and weighs 165 pounds. The outside is made of Zicral alloy, typically used in the aerospace industry. The company calls the Hyperia "the most advanced astronomical instrument ever developed" and has priced it accordingly at $45,000.

Autonomous WorkPod

$22,800.00 at AutonomousSee It

A pod for your backyard to get some work done, the Autonomous WorkPod comes fully equipped for $29,000. What does that entail? The pre-fab office is installed and constructed by pros, comes with cooling and heating, and power outlets even in the floor, all going together in pieces in no time. It's well-insulated, so it also works well for calls and video conferences. Simply have it built, plug it in, and you're ready to work.
